In a gym, a ceiling panel must withstand three things that don't exist in an office: vibrations, height, and objects that go higher than you think. Here's how to install it without having to come back to it.

Vibrations: the real enemy

A bar rested on the floor, a dropped dumbbell, a running treadmill: each impact propagates through the slab and up into the ceiling structure. A correct tightening at installation becomes insufficient tightening three months later.

  • Use fasteners suitable for the support, not the universal anchors provided: solid concrete, hollow concrete, plasterboard, and steel decking do not require the same material.
  • Plan for a check at one month, then one at six months. This takes five minutes with a ladder and a screwdriver.
  • If the ceiling is made of suspended panels, never fasten into the panel: go up to the supporting structure.

Headroom: what goes up in a gym

We always size for the users' heads, never for what they hold. Some useful heights:

In these areas, offset the grid rather than lowering the panels. A hexagon moved by one meter changes almost nothing in terms of lighting — a panel hit by a bar, however, does.

High ceilings: what changes

In a business premise with a 4 or 5 m ceiling, two effects combine: light dilutes with distance, and the grid appears finer when viewed from below.

  • Add 50% more panels beyond 3 m — this is the general rule, and it applies here too.
  • Consider a partial lowering in the main training area, maintaining the clear height calculated above. Bringing the light source 1.50 m closer truly improves comfort on the floor.
  • Plan for maintenance access: at 5 m, a simple cleaning requires a lift or scaffolding. It's better to think about it beforehand.

Dust, sweat, cleaning

A gym is a more aggressive environment than it seems: chalk dust, humidity, projections. Two consequences:

  • A panel should be cleaned dry or with a barely damp cloth, with the power off. Chalk accumulates and causes a loss of brightness faster than you'd think.
  • In a damp area — changing rooms, showers, sauna — an appropriate protection rating is required. This is not the same equipment as on the gym floor.

Electricity

A large grid represents significant power. Have the existing line checked to ensure it can handle it, and provide an accessible switch from the entrance: nobody wants to cross a dark gym to reach the switch at the back.
