Barber & hair salon

A salon is judged in the chair and in the mirror. Drag the handle: same workstation, before and after.

The hexagonal LEDs extend more than a meter around each chair. Light comes from several directions, removing the shadows under the chin and behind the neck so the barber sees everything clearly.

A single spotlight right above the head hollows out the client's features and leaves the neck in shadow. The hexagonal LEDs, by contrast, spread light evenly and give the barber a clear view.

Frequently asked questions

Salon lighting: your questions

What barbers and hairdressers ask us before ordering.

How many hexagons for my salon?

Allow 0.70 hexagons per m² in a salon — more than a garage, because you work on details and the light has to come from everywhere. The grid should extend about one meter around each station.

Why do my clients look tired under my current lighting?

Because a single spot above the head deepens dark circles and hardens features. The problem isn't the amount of light, it's the cast shadows. Light arriving from several directions at once erases them.

What color temperature to avoid distorting a hair color?

4,000 to 5,000 K at the workstations. Below that, the light leans yellow and hides highlights; above, it leans blue and cools skin tones. Keep warm light for the reception area.

Does CRI really matter?

It's the number one criterion for color work. A CRI above 90 is needed to render reds and coppers — exactly the most delicate shades. A “CRI” claimed without a number means nothing.

Why do barbers cover the whole ceiling?

Because the grid does two jobs at once: it lights without shadows, and it becomes the salon's visual signature — the one people recognize in clients' Instagram photos.

Does it glare at the client in the mirror?

Not if the grid is spread out: no panel sits alone in the line of sight. The spot to check is the shampoo basin, where the client looks up at the ceiling lying back: offset the grid or lower the intensity over that area.

Do I need an electrician?

In commercial premises, yes, for the connection. A full grid can draw more power than the existing lighting circuit supports: have the line checked before you buy, not after.

Can I mix two series of panels?

No. Two series never have exactly the same tint, and on a fully covered ceiling the difference shows to the naked eye. One series for the whole salon.

The Hexeli benchmark

Lighting a hair salon or barbershop

In a salon, lighting is part of the service. It dictates what the client sees in the mirror at the end, and what they photograph when they leave.

The real issue isn't brightness, it's cast shadows and color fidelity.

The problem is shadows

A single source above the head hides the neck and hollows the face. A distributed grid lights from several directions: the shadows cancel each other out.

Extend one meter around the station

The grid doesn't stop at the chair. One meter of overhang on each side is what lets the barber move around the client without standing in their own shadow.

The storefront test

Go outside with a colored lock of hair and compare its shade in natural light. In ten seconds, you'll know if your light is deceiving you. It's the most reliable test, and it's free.

The shampoo bowl

It's the only place in the salon where the client looks at the ceiling for several minutes. Offset the grid there or dim it: it's a moment to relax, not an inspection.
