Garage

Same garage, same angle, same time: only the light has changed. Drag the handle to see what a hexagonal frame on the ceiling looks like.

A garage lit by a single central neon light leaves the walls and corners in darkness. The hexagonal grid distributes light over the entire surface, including behind the car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Garage lighting: your questions

Short answers. Each question links to the complete guide when available.

How many hexagons for a 20, 30 or 50 m² garage?

The Hexeli rule is approximately 1 hexagon per 1.5 m² of ceiling, or 0.55 hexagons per m² in a garage. This works out to 11 hexagons for 20 m², 17 for 30 m², and 28 for 50 m². For ceilings over 3 m high, add 50%.

Will it be too bright for a garage attached to the house?

No, because the light is not concentrated at one point. It is distributed over the entire grid, which eliminates the "spotlight" effect and harsh shadows. If the garage also serves as a living room, plan for a separate circuit to light only a part of the grid in the evening.

Can I lay the frame myself?

Assembling the frame, yes: the panels screw to the ceiling and connect to each other with connectors. Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes for a standard garage, with two people. The connection to the electrical panel, however, is a job for an electrician — which is also what makes the installation insurable.

What if my ceiling is low, sloped, or the garage isn't a rectangle?

The grid adapts: we follow the shape of the room instead of forcing a rectangle. On a low ceiling, we never lower the panels, we widen the grid. Around a beam, we go around it rather than interrupting it.

How much does it consume?

A LED strip consumes significantly less than fluorescent lighting of equivalent power. The right thing to do is to compare lumens, not watts: watts no longer tell us anything about the amount of light since the switch to LEDs.

White or RGB for a garage?

Neutral white 6,500 K for working: this light renders colors without distortion. RGB is an ambient complement, to be placed on the periphery or on a wall—never as the main lighting for a workspace.

Can I enlarge the frame later?

Yes, provided you stick to the same series. Two different series will never give exactly the same shade, and on a ceiling, this will be immediately noticeable. The simplest solution is to order one more panel than you need and keep it.

What if a panel fails?

It can be replaced individually, without touching the rest of the frame. This is the advantage of a modular installation compared to a single-piece luminaire.

The Hexeli Landmark

Lighting a garage: the Hexeli benchmarks

A poorly lit garage is not a dark garage; it's a garage where the light comes from a single point. You end up working in your own shadow, and corners remain dark. A hexagonal grid solves this problem through distribution, not power.

The guidelines below apply to a private garage with a standard ceiling and light-colored walls.

0.55 hex/m² Garage density
6,500 K Neutral white
+50% Beyond 3 m

How many hexagons

Multiply the floor area by 0.55 and round up. This is a sizing baseline, not a maximum: no one has ever regretted having an extra hexagon.

Height changes everything

Light diffuses with distance. Beyond 3 m (10 ft) under the ceiling, allow for 50% more panels for the same area.

Where to place the screen

Focused on the car, not the room. We first illuminate what we are looking at: the hood, the workbench, the entrance. A meter of overhang on each side of the vehicle prevents working in its shadow when leaning over.

Why 6,500 K

It's the neutral white: it doesn't yellow or blue. A painting, a colored thread, or an oil stain appear as they are. Warm white, on the other hand, is for a living room.
