Workshop

Mechanic's workshop, detailing bay, professional garage: here you're not after an ambience, you need to see. Drag the handle.

Before: a few fluorescent tubes light the floor but leave the walls and work areas in shadow. After: the hexagonal LEDs spread powerful, even light across the whole workshop.

Powerful, even light across the whole workshop: every detail becomes visible, with no dark spots between vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

Workshop lighting: your questions

Short answers, with a link to the detailed guide.

What density for a professional workshop?

1 hexagon per 20 sq ft (0.55 per m²) as a baseline, like a garage. But go up to 1 per 13 sq ft (0.80 per m²) over inspection and detailing zones: that's where a finish gets judged.

Why 0.80 for detailing and not 0.55?

Because you're not looking for the same thing. In mechanics, you want to see a part. In detailing, you want to see a flaw a few microns deep in the clear coat: the grid has to reflect densely enough on the bodywork to reveal holograms.

How many lumens do I need?

The right benchmark isn't the panel's lumens but the illuminance at the work surface, in lux: 300 to 500 lux for everyday work, 750 lux and up for quality control. Watts, meanwhile, have meant nothing since LED.

Should the workbench, lift, and pit be lit the same?

No, they're three different problems. The workbench needs light on the work surface with no shadow from your hand; the lift needs light under the vehicle; the pit needs clean, permanent lighting that doesn't depend on a work lamp.

What CRI do I need to judge bodywork?

CRI above 90. Below that, reds and coppers look wrong, and a touch-up that looks right in the garage is visibly off outdoors.

Should I keep an inspection light?

Yes, but for a different job. The grid is the work light; the inspection lamp is the control light, brought in at a grazing angle to read a defect. One doesn't replace the other.

My ceiling is 13 ft (4 m) high, is that a problem?

No, but allow 50% more panels. Also think about access for cleaning: at that height, basic maintenance calls for a lift platform or scaffolding.

Dust, splashes, sanding?

Dust builds up on the diffusers and cuts output very gradually — you don't notice it happening. Plan a yearly clean with a dry cloth, power off. In wash bays, you need a suitable ingress protection rating.

The Hexeli benchmark

Lighting a workshop: mechanics, detailing, bodywork

A workshop doesn't have one lighting need, it has three: see wide to move around, see sharp at the bench, and see true on a car body. A single uniform grid doesn't do all three.

The Hexeli method: a base density everywhere, reinforced over the inspection zones.

1 hex / 20 sq ft Workshop baseline
1 hex / 13 sq ft Detailing area
CRI > 90 Color check

One density per zone

0.55 over circulation and everyday mechanics, 0.80 over the vehicle footprint in detailing and at inspection stations.

The vehicle lift

The grid should extend about 3 ft (1 m) beyond the raised vehicle, otherwise you're back to working by handheld lamp as soon as you go underneath.

CRI before kelvins

A CRI above 90 is the first thing to check on a product sheet. Color temperature comes next. A “CRI” claimed without a number means nothing.

Work light, inspection light

The grid lights the work. The final check is done at a grazing angle with an inspection lamp: it's the angle that reveals the defect, not the amount of light.

Benchmarks by workshop zone
Zone DensityWhat you need to see
Circulation, storage 1 hex / 22–31 sq ftMove around, find things
Everyday mechanics 1 hex / 20 sq ftSee the part and the tool
Vehicle lift 1 hex / 20 sq ft + 3 ft (1 m) overhangSee under the vehicle
Workbench 1 hex / 20 sq ft, offset gridNo shadow from your hand
Detailing, inspection 1 hex / 13 sq ftHolograms and clear coat defects

Add 50% more panels above 10 ft (3 m) ceiling height, and plan access for the yearly clean.
